Cluster of Excellence Promotes Technological Expertise
The technology network Intelligent Technical Systems OstWestfalenLippe (in short: it's OWL) is formed of 174 companies, universities, research institutions and organizations which have come together to create the innovation leap from mechatronics to intelligent technical systems.
The world leaders in the engineering, electrical, electronics and automotive industries as well as top international research institutions have join forces. Recognized as a cluster of excellence by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), Intelligent Technical Systems are developed in 46 research projects. The 20 major industry partners include the Bielefeld-based company DMG Mori Seiki (formerly Gildemeister) and Goldbeck. Universities and research institutions in Bielefeld contribute their technological expertise. WEGE supports companies which wish to apply for a funded transfer project in the cluster of excellence.
In total, approximately 100 million Euros' worth of technologies are being developed for a new generation of products and production systems - from automation and drive solutions to machinery, vehicles, automated and household appliances to integrated production lines and smart grids. The BMBF is providing 40 million Euros in funding.
This collaboration between technology leaders and excellent research institutions has created a unique technology platform which provides growth and jobs in the region and will contribute to securing production in Germany.
